Introduction
The debate over the so-called “Ramey memo” begins with a point that is not disputed: the underlying photograph is a genuine Fort Worth press photograph taken on 8 July 1947. The importance of the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) negatives is that they provide a documented chain of custody linking the image to a named photographer, a specific newspaper assignment, an archival collection, and surviving original black-and-white negatives. That provenance does not establish what the blurred paper in Brigadier General Roger Ramey’s hand says, but it does establish that researchers are analysing an authentic historical press image rather than an anonymous copy or a later fabrication.
What UTA says it holds
UTA Libraries Special Collections preserves the photographic archive of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, one of the largest newspaper photographic collections in Texas. Within that collection are the photographs from the Fort Worth press conference held on 8 July 1947 after debris from Roswell was flown to Fort Worth Army Air Field. UTA’s catalogue identifies the relevant photographs as original black-and-white negatives from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram collection, rather than later photographic prints or copied reproductions. The archive attributes the photographs to newspaper photographer J. Bond Johnson and records the assignment date as 8 July 1947.
The catalogue distinguishes individual images from the same photographic assignment. One entry identifies the familiar scene of Brigadier General Roger Ramey examining Roswell debris while Colonel Thomas J. DuBose looks on. Another separately catalogues the close-up image of the paper held in Ramey’s hand—the image that later became known as the “Ramey memo”. Both records identify the original format as black-and-white negatives from the same newspaper collection and assignment, reinforcing that they are related frames from a documented photo session rather than isolated images of uncertain origin.
How the newspaper collection fixes provenance
The value of the UTA negatives lies less in what they show than in where they came from.
A strong provenance chain can be reconstructed from the surviving documentation:
- Photographer: J. Bond Johnson, a staff photographer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
- Date: 8 July 1947, matching the Fort Worth press event following the Roswell announcement.
- Employer: Fort Worth Star-Telegram, which commissioned and archived the assignment.
- Collection: The newspaper’s photographic archive, later transferred to UTA Libraries Special Collections.
- Archival identifiers: Collection numbers and catalogue entries linking the negatives to the original newspaper filing system rather than later private collections.
Each link in that chain reduces uncertainty. Instead of relying on an unattributed print reproduced decades later, researchers can trace the image back through institutional custody to the original newspaper assignment. Why original negatives matter more than later copies
When a historical photograph survives only as reproduced prints, newspaper halftones, photocopies or digital scans, every generation of copying introduces additional uncertainty. Contrast, sharpness and fine detail can all be altered.
Original negatives minimise those problems because they preserve the earliest surviving photographic information.
For the Ramey photograph, this has several consequences:
- they provide the closest surviving record of what Johnson’s camera actually captured;
- they avoid uncertainties introduced by later newspaper printing processes;
- they allow high-resolution rescanning using modern equipment;
- they provide a stable reference against which later reproductions can be compared.
This is one reason later attempts to enlarge the memo text have generally relied on scans derived from UTA’s archival negatives rather than on images reproduced in books or newspapers.
What the negatives can—and cannot—prove
The existence of original negatives answers one important question while leaving another unresolved.
The negatives demonstrate that:
- the photograph itself is authentic;
- it originated during the documented 8 July 1947 press conference;
- it belongs to an identifiable newspaper assignment;
- later researchers are working from a genuine historical source.
They do not demonstrate:
- that every letter on the paper is recoverable;
- that one particular enhancement method is correct;
- that competing transcriptions of the memo are reliable;
- that any specific reading of the blurred text has been conclusively established.
This distinction is frequently lost in discussions of the “Ramey memo”. Provenance and readability are separate issues. A photograph may have impeccable archival origins while still containing image detail too limited to decode with confidence.
Indeed, the continuing disagreement over memo transcriptions exists precisely because researchers are analysing a genuine but technically challenging photograph. Had the image lacked credible provenance, arguments over the wording would carry much less historical significance.
Why the source trail remains important
The UTA negatives have become the fixed point in an otherwise contested debate. Whatever interpretation one adopts regarding the memo’s contents, the source trail is unusually well documented for a key piece of Roswell evidence.
Rather than circulating as an anonymous image, the photograph can be traced through a named photographer, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s original photographic workflow, archival collection records, surviving negatives and long-term institutional preservation.
