On the afternoon of 8 July 1947, debris recovered from the Roswell area was brought to Fort Worth Army Air Field, where Brigadier General Roger Ramey briefed journalists and photographers. The event marked the military’s public reversal of the Roswell Army Air Field announcement issued earlier that day claiming recovery of a “flying disc”. During the Fort Worth presentation, reporters were shown debris identified as the remains of a weather balloon, and multiple photographs were taken of Ramey, Colonel Thomas J. Among those present was Fort Worth Star-Telegram photographer J. Bond Johnson. His photographs, now preserved in the University of Texas at Arlington’s Special Collections, include the only known close views of the document later dubbed the “Ramey memo”. How the photo fits the public news pivot

The Fort Worth session represents the exact public transition between two competing official narratives. Earlier on 8 July, Roswell Army Air Field announced that personnel had recovered a “flying disc”. Within hours, the Fort Worth briefing replaced that announcement with the explanation that the recovered material was simply balloon debris. Why same-day provenance limits later forgery claims

One reason the Ramey photograph occupies such a distinctive place in Roswell research is that its authenticity is supported by ordinary newsroom practices rather than extraordinary claims.

Several elements strengthen that provenance:

Because of that chain of custody, arguments that the memo image itself was fabricated years afterwards face a substantially higher evidential hurdle than claims involving anonymous photographs or undocumented copies. Any forgery hypothesis would need to account not only for later reproductions but also for the original newspaper negatives and their archival history.

Importantly, this does not validate any specific interpretation of the memo’s text. Provenance establishes that the photograph is genuinely connected to the Fort Worth press event. It does not establish what the partially visible document says, whether it was a military message, a news wire copy, or another paper entirely. The 8 July Fort Worth press event anchors the Ramey memo in a way that few other Roswell artefacts can match. It securely establishes that:

At the same time, the event does not settle the central controversy surrounding the memo. The photograph cannot, by itself, prove what was written on the document or whether any proposed transcription is correct. The limits arise from the quality of the surviving image, not from uncertainty about when or where it was taken.

That distinction explains why the Fort Worth press event continues to serve as the principal provenance anchor for the Ramey memo. The photograph’s evidential value begins with its firmly documented origin. Any interpretation of the memo’s text must build upon that foundation rather than substitute for it.
