In debates about the Roswell incident, the key question is not which document is more intriguing, but which one provides the stronger historical evidence. The document records information passed from Eighth Air Force headquarters to the FBI on the same day that Roswell became a national story. That readability matters because other researchers can independently inspect the same text and reach the same transcription. This uncertainty has practical consequences. Different analysts often extract different words from the same blurred areas. One researcher may see a phrase suggesting a crashed disc, while another may see unrelated wording. The teletype offers a readable contemporary description that can be independently checked and consistently transcribed. The memo offers a potentially important clue, but one embedded in a photograph whose text remains unresolved after decades of study.
