Introduction
The Fort Worth press photographs were only one part of the military’s rapid response to the Roswell announcement. At almost the same time that reporters were being shown balloon debris at Eighth Air Force headquarters, an internal FBI teletype recorded the same basic explanation moving through official government channels. That single-page message is important because it shows that the balloon-and-radar-reflector account was not confined to newspaper headlines or a staged photo opportunity. Instead, it was being communicated between military officers and the FBI on 8 July 1947, providing an independent documentary record of how the official explanation spread beyond the press.
What the Dallas teletype reported
On 8 July 1947, the FBI’s Dallas Field Office sent a teletype to FBI Headquarters and the Bureau’s Cincinnati office after receiving information by telephone from Eighth Air Force headquarters in Fort Worth. The message stated that an object “purporting to be a flying disc” had been recovered near Roswell, but immediately added details pointing towards a conventional explanation. According to the military source, the object was hexagonal in shape, suspended from a balloon by cable, and attached to a balloon approximately 20 feet in diameter. The teletype further reported that the recovered object resembled “a high altitude weather balloon with a radar reflector”. Why internal records matter beside press photos
The Fort Worth photographs remain the best-known visual record of the official explanation, but the FBI teletype adds something different. Photographs show what reporters were shown; the teletype shows what one federal agency was officially told by another. Together they indicate that the balloon explanation was being disseminated simultaneously through public relations and inter-agency communications.
This distinction matters because the FBI was not conducting an independent investigation into the Roswell debris. The Bureau simply recorded information received from the military and documented that it would take no further action. That limited role reduces the temptation to treat the document as proof of either extraterrestrial claims or later Air Force explanations.
