Would Blind Readers See the Same Words?

Introduction
The strongest imaginable improvement in the Ramey memo debate would not be another confident claim that the blurred text says “victims of the wreck” or some other Roswell-related phrase. It would be a result in which independent readers, given no hint about Roswell, UFOs, crashes, bodies, balloons, or military cover stories, repeatedly identified the same words from the image. The central challenge is not simply image quality; it is whether the text can be read without expectation shaping what people think they see. Studies of the memo have long highlighted this problem, and one of the most important critiques of past decipherments is that different readers often extract different messages from the same ambiguous marks.[ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearchGate(PDF) “A Message in a Bottle:” Confounds in Deciphering…A document held by General Ramey from the Roswell UFO case reporte…
Within the broader question of what stronger Ramey memo evidence would require, blind reading is therefore a crucial test. If agreement appears only after readers are told what they are looking for, the result remains vulnerable to suggestion. If agreement emerges before any contextual information is supplied, the evidential value rises substantially.
Why Priming Matters in the Ramey Memo Dispute
The Ramey memo is an unusually difficult reading task. Researchers are not examining a surviving document but trying to interpret a small, low-resolution area within a 1947 photograph. Under such conditions, ambiguous shapes can often be perceived in multiple ways.[UT Arlington Libraries]sites.libraries.uta.eduI wish we could get a consensus on what it says and make a proper…Read more…
This concern is not merely theoretical. In a frequently cited study, James Houran and Kevin Randle examined whether expectations influenced attempts to decipher the memo. Participants were assigned to different groups and given different contextual suggestions before trying to read the text. One group was told the document related to the Roswell UFO case, another was told it related to atomic-bomb testing, and a third received no thematic guidance. The study was explicitly designed to test whether interpretation of the memo was being shaped by prior beliefs rather than by clearly visible text.[ResearchGate+2ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearchGate(PDF) “A Message in a Bottle:” Confounds in Deciphering…A document held by General Ramey from the Roswell UFO case reporte…
The broader psychological concern is well established. Research on priming shows that prior information can influence how people perceive and interpret incomplete or ambiguous stimuli. When observers expect certain categories of words or meanings, they may become more likely to recognise those patterns in uncertain material.[PubMed+2OpenEdition Journals]pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govPriming effects in a letter-by-letter reader depend upon…by DL Schacter · 1990 · Cited by 69 — We investigate priming in a lette…
That is precisely why the disputed words in the Ramey memo matter. Advocates of particular readings have proposed phrases such as “victims of the wreck”, while critics have argued that the same area may contain different words or may not be readable at all. The disagreement itself is evidence that expectation effects cannot simply be assumed away. theufochronicles.com+3roswellproof.com+3kevinrandle.blogspot.com[roswellproof.com]roswellproof.comRoswell Proof – Ramey MemoFar and away the most important word of the entire message is "VICTIMS" on the third line (part of phrase "THE…
How a Blind Reading Test Would Work
A rigorous blind-reading experiment would remove as much contextual influence as possible.
Readers would receive only the image segment containing the text. They would not be told:
- that the image came from the Roswell case;[researchgate.net]researchgate.netResearchGate(PDF) “A Message in a Bottle:” Confounds in Deciphering…A document held by General Ramey from the Roswell UFO case reporte…
- that previous researchers claimed to see references to a wreck;
- that words such as “victims”, “remains”, “disc”, or “balloon” had been proposed;
- what outcome investigators hoped to find.
Instead, participants would independently transcribe whatever letters or words they believed were visible.
A stronger design could include several safeguards:
- Multiple independent reader groups drawn from different backgrounds.
- No communication among participants before transcription.
- Recording confidence levels for each proposed word.
- Predefined scoring rules established before analysis begins.
- Comparison with control images containing similarly degraded text of known content.
Such a process would shift the question from “Can someone produce a plausible reading?” to “Do different people see the same reading without being guided toward it?”
That distinction is critical because the Ramey memo controversy has never lacked proposed transcriptions. What it lacks is a demonstration that those transcriptions emerge reliably from the image itself.
What Agreement Would Need to Look Like
Not all agreement would be equally persuasive.
If ten readers examined the memo and produced ten substantially different transcriptions, the result would suggest that the image remains too ambiguous for strong conclusions. Likewise, if readers agreed on some routine words but disagreed on the key disputed phrases, the central controversy would remain unresolved.
For the memo to become substantially stronger evidence, agreement would need to occur precisely where disagreement has historically been greatest. The most contested regions are the ones that have been cited as potentially supporting extraordinary claims. Competing interpretations have included readings such as “victims of the wreck”, “remains of the wreck”, “viewing of the wreck”, and other alternatives. theufochronicles.com+3roswellproof.com+3kevinrandle.blogspot.com[roswellproof.com]roswellproof.comRoswell Proof – Ramey MemoFar and away the most important word of the entire message is "VICTIMS" on the third line (part of phrase "THE…
Meaningful convergence would therefore require:
- high agreement on individual letters;
- high agreement on complete words;
- consistency across separate reader groups;
- similar results using independently processed image versions;
- successful replication by researchers with differing views of the Roswell case.
A single impressive transcription would not be enough. Replication is the key issue. If the same words repeatedly emerge from different readers working independently, the argument shifts from subjective interpretation toward measurable observation.
Why This Standard Is Higher Than Past Claims
Many discussions of the memo focus on whether a particular enhancement method is superior or whether a specific word looks convincing when enlarged. Those debates matter, but they do not fully address the deeper evidential problem.
The University of Texas at Arlington Roswell project notes that researchers continue to seek consensus regarding what the memo actually says. Decades after the photograph was taken, no universally accepted transcription exists.[UT Arlington Libraries]sites.libraries.uta.eduI wish we could get a consensus on what it says and make a proper…Read more…
This absence of consensus is important because extraordinary readings gain force only when they survive scrutiny by people who are not invested in them. A phrase recognised only by readers already expecting a Roswell-related message remains vulnerable to the charge of confirmation bias. By contrast, a phrase independently recognised by blind readers would be far harder to dismiss as expectation-driven pattern matching.
The 2022 reassessment of the Roswell incident reflected this continuing uncertainty, noting that attempts to decipher the Ramey memo have not produced definitive results capable of ruling competing explanations in or out.[Journal of Scientific Exploration]journalofscientificexploration.orgJournal of Scientific ExplorationA Grounded Theory Update on the Roswell UFO Incident20 Aug 2022 — Attempts to decipher text from a photo…
The Real Test of a Stronger Memo Reading
The most persuasive future development would not be a more dramatic interpretation but a more objective one. Blind readers would provide a way to separate what is genuinely visible in the memo from what observers may expect to find.
If independent readers, working without Roswell context, repeatedly produced the same key words, the memo’s evidential status would improve significantly. If they continued to diverge sharply, the disagreement itself would suggest that the image remains too ambiguous to bear the weight placed upon it.
For that reason, blind transcription is not a side issue in the Ramey memo debate. It is one of the clearest tests of whether the disputed words are truly present in the photograph or are emerging from the expectations of the people trying to read them.[ResearchGate+2ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearchGate(PDF) “A Message in a Bottle:” Confounds in Deciphering…A document held by General Ramey from the Roswell UFO case reporte…
