The transcriptions often differ on what precedes the location. Some readers saw a simple routing phrase such as “AT FORT WORTH, TEX.” Others interpreted an additional word before it, producing variants like “TEAM AT FORT WORTH, TEX.” Still others were less confident and stopped after “AT FORT WORTH”. Why Agreement Is Not Full Validation
The existence of repeated Fort Worth readings does not automatically prove that the line has been deciphered correctly.
Houran and Randle’s study was designed partly to examine whether readers project expectations onto ambiguous text. Their experiments found that participants often produced interpretations influenced by the contextual story they were given. Nevertheless, the researchers also observed that a small number of words appeared repeatedly across different groups and different expectations. Fort Worth benefits from an additional advantage: it is a mundane reading.
