Introduction
Houran and Randle’s suggestion experiment is often remembered for showing how expectations can influence what people think they see in the Ramey memo. Equally important, however, is what the experiment did not accomplish: it could not determine what the memo actually said. Even after participants were given enlarged images and researchers worked from enhanced reproductions, the underlying problem remained unchanged. The original text occupied only a tiny portion of a 1947 photograph, and the available reproductions contained too little reliable visual information to support a definitive reading. The study therefore became evidence about human perception as much as evidence about the memo itself. A common misunderstanding is that the experiment tested the memo using a newly recovered high-quality original. It did not. The researchers were explicit that the memo represented an ambiguous visual stimulus. Participants were not reading a clear document line by line. Instead, they were examining an image in which some letter-like shapes appeared visible while much of the text remained blurred, distorted, or incomplete. The Limits of Enlargements and Negatives
One reason the memo debate persisted is that many investigators hoped improved source materials would solve the problem. The technical difficulty is straightforward. Enlarging an image does not automatically create new information. If a photographed word occupies only a handful of pixels or is blurred by focus limitations, motion, contrast loss, printing artefacts or generational copying, making the image larger mainly enlarges the uncertainty. Why Image Quality Shaped Every Conclusion
