Why genre changes evidential value

The debate is not merely academic. The document’s genre directly affects how historians should interpret its contents.

Consider two scenarios:

• Scenario A: the paper is a classified operational message discussing a recovery operation.

The same phrase could have dramatically different significance in each case.
