Do Missing Files Make Witnesses More Believable?

Introduction
The Roswell case presents historians with an unusual problem: there are remarkably few surviving official records directly connected to the July 1947 incident, yet there is a vast body of witness testimony collected decades later. This imbalance has encouraged many researchers to lean heavily on recollections from former military personnel, civilians, and second-hand informants. However, the existence of archival gaps does not automatically make later memories more reliable. The GAO’s findings were striking not because they uncovered hidden UFO files, but because they revealed how little documentation remained. The search located only two surviving records originating in 1947 that directly addressed the incident:

The investigation also found that some Roswell Army Air Field administrative records and outgoing message files had been destroyed. Particularly important were missing outgoing communications that might have shown how personnel at Roswell described the event to higher headquarters in real time. Why Gaps Increased Reliance on Witnesses
The absence of extensive documentary evidence created a vacuum that later testimony naturally filled.
Many famous Roswell witnesses did not publicly tell their stories until the late 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s. By then, researchers were confronting a situation in which few contemporary records could either confirm or contradict personal recollections. This distinction matters because historical reasoning works differently from suspicion. A destroyed message file might have contained routine discussions about weather balloons, classified military projects, administrative matters, or something more unusual. Once the records are gone, their contents cannot simply be assumed.
The same principle applies when evaluating witness testimony. A witness account may be accurate, partly accurate, mistaken, or influenced by later developments. The disappearance of records does not automatically move that testimony into the category of established fact.
